THE FORBIDDEN GAME 3 THE KILL CHAPTER TWO
Darcey screamed it didn’t matter everyone was screaming Marie had unbuckled her seat belt to lean towards Shane and kian Shane was bounced upwards so hard his head almost hit the ceiling they were falling and the sensation was worst then a thousand elevators there was nothing beneath darcey because the seat was falling away what do people think about when they’re going to die?
What should I be thinking? Mark she should think about mark and how she loved him but it was impossible there was no room inside of her for anything but astonishment and fear then the plane lurched up instead of falling her seat was pressing against her the whole thing had taken only a second or so the pilots voice came on over the intercom smooth and rich
Ah sorry about that folks we hit a little turbulence were going to try to get above this weather in the meantime please keep your seat belts fastened just turbulence ordinary stuff they weren’t going to die darcey looked out of the window again she couldn’t see much they were in the middle of clouds mist and darkness just like the mist and darkness the shadow men bring her mind raced on irresistibly
Any minute now you’ll see the eyes the hungry hungry eyes… but she didn’t see anything hey listen Bryan was saying huskily about my dream- it was just a dream bry said Marie ever practical darcey was grateful for the little edge in Marie’s voice the sharp edge of reason like a wake up slap just a dream didn’t mean anything darcey echoed unfairly because she didn’t for a moment believe that but she had no idea what it did mean and ganging up on Bryan was the only comfort available
Was tristian behind it? Torturing them with images of Mary? Nightmares were the dark angel’s speciatly the shadow men like the sandman only he brings nightmares and by now he knows us all knows our weak points he can bring our worst fears to life and they may not be real but we wont be able to tell the difference what are we getting into?
She spent the rest of the flight staring out of the oval window her hands clutching the cold metal ends of her armrests Pittsburgh at 6:56am was cool breezy the sky a blue that early morning skies in London was seldom they had to take a taxi from the airport because hertz the car dealers wouldn’t rent a car to anyone under twenty five Marie thought this was outrageous and wanted to argue but darcey dragged her away
Were trying to be inconspicuous darcey said on the way to monessen they saw a river with a large flat ugly ship on it the monongahela and coal barges darcey said remembering when she was a young child by the time they got to monessen Shane was eyeing the taxi meter with deep concern everyone else though was staring out of the window cobblestone streets kian said d`you believe that? C`EST drole ca Marie said how quaint they’re not all cobblestone she added
They’re all steep said Shane because the town was built on hills- seven hills said darcey still remembering the town well were here she said aloud forcibly distracting herself from thinking of mark and nix three center drive the taxi driver said and got out to unload their duffel bags from the trunk marie paid the eighty dollar taxi fare adding an extravagant tip
Money- Shane began in an anguished whisper marie ignored him the taxi drove off darcey held her breath as she looked around all the way from Pittsburgh she’d had flashes of familiarity but here in front of her – her grandparents house the familiarity came back in a great sweeping rush engulfing her I know this! I know this place! I remember of course she remembered she lived here with her grandparents the broad green lawn that had grew all the way around the street with no sidewalk
In between this low brick house with the little white porch she couldn’t tell how many times she’d gone running up to it- it was strange sort of remembering though the house seemed smaller and not exactly the way she’d pictured it old and new at the same time maybe because its been empty for ten years darcey thought or maybe its changed-
No it hadn’t changed she had changed the last time she’d stood here she’d been nearly five years old and the memory of that was like a light splash of icy water it reminded her of what she’d come here to do am I brave enough? Am I really brave enough to go back down to that room and face everything that happened there? A muscular arm went around her shoulders Bryan hugged her close to him and smiled darcey blinked back wetness and saw that everyone was looking at her
Marie was standing silently her glossy auburn hair shinning like copper in the early light kian looked solemn Bryan with his arm still around darcey gave another barbaric smile c`mon tiger lets do it he said darcey let out her breath and tried to smile the way herself around back there should be um stone steps down to the basement and a back door if memory serves me right? Said darcey
Memory did on the back porch kian pulled a crowbar out of his duffel bag they’d come prepared in the duffel bags there were also towels to lay over the frames of any windows they might have to break and a hammer and a screwdriver it’s a good thing the house is empty if it weren’t we couldn’t do this marie said placing the crowbar judiciously well if it weren’t there wouldn’t be any point in doing it said Shane
Whoever moved in would have cleared the basement for that matter we cant be sure somebody hasn’t? Said Marie wait! Bryan yelled everybody froze look at that Bryan pointed to something besides the door a black and silver sticker with curling edges when Shane wiped the dirt off with his fingers darcey could make out the lettering this property protected by monongahela valley security armed response a security alarm kian said oh terrific marie looked at darcey do you think its still working?
Marie was still holding the crowbar at the door we can try and see she said grinning no we cant that’s just exactly what we cant do if it is working we wont be able to come back today because they’ll be all over the place said darcey I think were in fairly serious trouble here said Shane darcey shut her eyes why hadn’t she thought of this? Her grandparents had probably always had that alarm system but it wasn’t the kind of thing a kid would notice
But am not a kid anymore I should have thought now there’s got to be a way to get in said Bryan why? Marie’s voice was snappish because she felt bad darcey knew because she was scared there doesn’t have to be a way just because you want one Marie said darcey think darcey think-think you forgot the alarm is there anything else you’ve forgotten? If were going to get philosophical kian began Mrs durash said darcey
