Foursome Still Unbreakable After Winning Performance
They came, they sang, they put on a glamorous good-time show, but was it a farewell foray? That's a question that only Westlife can answer, but they did keep telling their fans how great they had been to support them for the last six-and-a-half years.
Let's face it, that's an eternity in boyband terms, and I doubt that any of the undercard who came on to dance or mime to backing tracks at the start of the evening would make that sort of mark. Were one of the line-ups called Headlice, or was that just a trick of the mike?
Bizarrely, G4 turned up in the middle of the warm-up acts, opening with My Way, then Everybody Hurts, then a song "you've never heard before" which turned out to be Bowie's Life on Mars. Somehow the sound of the line "lawman beating up the wrong guy" which sounded so angry shrieked by the ever edgy Bowie on Hunky Dory doesn't have the same anger or resonance in four-part harmony. Still, the guys were under pressure in front of an arena crowd for the first time and out in front of the curtain, warming up for the foursome everyone had come to see.
Their entrance was spectacular, from the back of the auditorium, spot-lit in the tunnel, complete with minders. It was like a boxingmatch, but there was no fight. The crowd were won over from the start of the show, with a spectacular set, neon-lit Westlife sign, two flights of steps, gold back-drapes and three screens for footage of the boys' performances.
