Westlife singer's Welsh connections
WESTLIFE are back for their fourth visit to Cardiff, promoting their Rat Pack themed album Allow Us To Be Frank, with three consecutive nights at the Cardiff International Arena this week. We speak to Sligo dad-to-be Shane Filan about the show, his Welsh connections and life after Bryan MacFadden in Europe's biggest boyband.
What can we expect from your gigs in Cardiff this week?
Well on tour we are going to do a section of Rat Pack songs, maybe four or five in the middle of our shows. We know that the fans will want to hear all the Westlife hits as well so we don't want to alienate them by singing just this album.
You have relatives in the Valleys, will you get a chance to meet up with some family?
I will yes. My Auntie Lynne and all my cousins are only up in Pontypridd. So every time I go to Wales I make the effort to meet up with them.
Do you miss your wife Gillian, who's expecting your first child in June, when on the road?
Totally. I see quite a lot of her to be honest, I usually don't go a week without seeing her.
Are you missing Bryan?
Oh yes completely. Because he was with us for six years it was a major difference at the beginning. But we have got very used to it now. We are still friends.
What do you think of Bryan's 'cool' new image?
I think he looks a lot better. I wish he'd looked like that in Westlife!
Since leaving Bryan has made comments criticising the amount of cover versions Westlife did. What do you think about this?
Yes Bryan did feel like that and I think that was one of the main reasons he left. But for us, we enjoy what we do.
Have you talked to him about his split with Kerry, and his relationship with Delta Goodrem?
I don't know very much to be honest as it isn't really any of my business.
Tickets for Westlife's shows at the CIA on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are still available at £27.50 on 029 2022 4488
