Legends to return for Tsunami fundraiser
ALAN HANSEN, Ian Rush, Bruce Grobbelaar and John Barnes are just some of the Liverpool legends who have pledged to appear at the Tsunami Soccer Aid game at Anfield next month.
Plans for the fundraising event are now gathering pace with a host of former Anfield greats and celebrities committed to the cause.
Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans is to return to the Anfield dug-out once more as he takes charge of the legends team against a celebrity XI managed by Harry Redknapp on Easter Sunday.
The latest Liverpool recruits will join Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman on Sunday, March 27, while EastEnders' Shane Ritchie, Bryan McFadden, Nicky Byrne from Westlife and the members of rock collective Kasabian have signed up to the celebrity team.
Evans, now John Toshack's assistant at Wales, said: "It is great to be involved in such a good cause and it's an honour for me.
"The only problem for me will be picking a team because everyone wants to play. Phil Thompson wants to come back and play at Anfield, Alan Hansen, Neil Rud-dock, John Barnes and Bruce Grobbelaar. We have had a great response from the players.
"Footballers often get a bad name because of the actions of one or two but 95% of the lads are a great credit to the sport on a weekly basis.
"We are hoping to have a couple of training sessions to make sure the lads will be in a reasonable state, and hopefully Steve Heighway will let us use the Academy to train," he added.
Opera singer Katherine Jenkins will perform "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the interval and proceeds from an EP featuring the song will also go to the Tsunami appeal.
The organisers, who include Tranmere captain Jason McAteer and ex-Liverpool striker David Johnson, also plan to auction a place on the celebrity team to a member of the public.
Details of the auction will be released at a later date but tickets for the game, which kicks off at 4pm, will be on sale from Monday,
February 28. Priced £15 adults, £10 over-65s and disabled concessions and £5 for under 16s the tickets will be available from the Liverpool ticket office from 9.15am- 4.45pm Monday to Friday, and 9.15am until kick-off on match days.
They will also be on sale from the Tranmere club shop 9.30am- 5pm Monday to Friday, 10am-1pm Saturday, and from 9.30am until kick-off on match days.
